Tides & Vibes Homestay – Port Blair

Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of Islands in the Indian territory located in the Bay of Bengal. Located in South Andaman district is its capital city Port Blair, the only entry point for the Islands through sea and air route. The city has a lot of places which hint at the penal settlement of Britishers before independence and act as a memorial for the Indian freedom struggle. It has various places of interest like historical Cellular Jail, museums, beaches, markets, and parks. Anthropological museum here focuses on the indigenous tribes of the Islands.

This is the oldest homestay in the Islands. The place is in close proximity to all major points of interest as well as the airport, jetty (for catching inter-island ferry to other Islands), and market. The homestay has three apartments with individual entrances on the same premises as the owner’s bungalow. The main house has a unique traditional Burmese design which was made with wood earlier and renovated later. There is a beautiful garden space and a terrace lounge.

Apartment 1 has one large bedroom with 2 single beds and one double bed, a living cum dining room and an attached bathroom. Apartment 2 has one room with a double bed, an attached bathroom without AC and can be connected to Apartment 1 if required. And there is a Duplex cottage that has 2 bedrooms and a bath. There is a common sit-out area on the terrace of the main house which is a great place to relax and enjoy the sea view. In all, 10 people can be accommodated in the homestay. It is quite popular among solo and female travelers.

Know Your Host

A very impressive and energetic lady Dinaz Noble heads this house and will host you here along with her family. Dinaz knows a lot about the culture and history of the islands as the family moved here long time ago and have seen the changes Port Blair went through. She can give you lots of good advice about the places to visit. Shiraz, her son is a graduate of hotel management and takes care of the homestay along with his wife Bakhtawar. Tanaz is a reputed Kayaking Instructor with a lot of achievements under her belt. She has made history by becoming the first kayaker to cross the very feisty 10-degree channel in Andaman Islands.

Apart from the homestay they also have an agriculture plantation where they grow organic spices like clove, pepper and cinnamon along with Aricanut and Coconut. They also sell them in beautiful packaging which is a must take-home souvenir. For those who wish to experience wilderness, they have a water house adjacent to the island. Shiraz also conducts Kayaking tours around the private island. He enjoys talking about the Islands, life and is the go-to person to guide you for information about sightseeing in the Islands.

An excellent option for a short stay at Port Blair.

An excellent option for a short stay at Port Blair. The Nobel family is extremely nice and warm. They took out time to come and speak to me on all the days I was there. The location is very close to the harbour from where the ferries to the islands leave. I stayed there for 4 nights in total, across a 3 week period. If having meals, do inform them in advance, so that they can keep it ready. The rooms were perfect for a night's stay. On my first night, they offered me the family room to stay in, which had a nice dining area too. Do remember it's a homestay and one is welcomed in their home. The rooms are on the ground floor and one gets the privacy to come and go as one pleases without really disturbing the family. Would prefer this option rather than a hotel for a short stay.

Lovely experience

Lovely experience of being hosted by Mrs D and Shiraz at their home in Port Blair. Rooms were good, wifi functional and amenities all in order. Best part of the stay was the conversations with both of them, loved them all, learnt a lot about andamans, port blair and thoroughly enjoyed their suggestions which helped us work our travels around both port blair, other islands and north andaman! Truly warm, welcoming family, felt like we were at home! Would always be a pitstop for me at Port Blair in future.
