Leh

‘Land of Mystic Lamas’, ‘The Moonland’ and also ‘The Last Shangirala’ are the titles given to Ladakh, all with a bit of truth. Ladakh is bounded by two of the world’s highest mountain ranges – the Karakoram and the Great Himalaya, varies between 2743 mtr. to 7672 mtr. above the sea level. This miniature of Tibet is a land of medieval monasteries, fluttering prayer flags, cold deserts, peaks and passes.

Centuries ago Leh was an important stop on the old carvan silk rout from China. Now it’s a military base and one of the most popular tourist destinations of North India, situated at 3524 mtr. Leh is dominated by massive 17th-century Leh Palace, modeled on the Dalai Lama’s former home (Tibet’s Potala Palace), overlooks the old town’s bazaar and maze like lanes. With the only airport in Ladakh region, Leh is the hub of all travel activities throughout Ladakh.
