Mawlynnong

Mawlynnong is a small village in lush green East Khasi hills of Meghalaya. The fruit orchards, colorful gardens, rushing streams, evergreen surroundings and the well-preserved traditions of the Khasis provide a perfect picture of this tiny village on the edge of Meghalaya’s southern ranges.  The village was awarded the title “cleanest village in Asia” by Discover India in 2003 and the residents have kept it sparkling clean till date. The houses are neatly lined around the concrete roads that are dotted with beautiful bamboo garbage baskets. The main attraction here is the old Nohwet Living Root Bridge created by weaving the roots of the Ficus Elastica tree around a framework. You can also gaze at the seemingly endless plains of Bangladesh that lay just beyond, from high mounts in the village.

The nearest airport is in Shillong (78 km) and Guwahati is the nearest railhead (172 km). Regular road services are available from Shillong and Cherrapunji. You can hire a cab or take a bus to the village from the airport and the railway station.
